Why does haymitch hate cato

Back inside, she kisses Peeta again and he smiles at her. She can't help but think how good he is at this fake love stuff. Katniss' discovery of Peeta is both uplifting and daunting. She's glad to see that he has survived, but also knows that in order to save him, she's going to need stronger medicines.

It's also comforting for her to have a hunting partner, but, at the moment, Peeta is more of a liability than a partner. Should they be attacked by another tribute, Katniss would not only have to defend herself, but she'd also have to protect Peeta. The mockingjay appears again in this chapter, and, just as it serves as a warning call for the hovercraft, it also alerts Katniss to Peeta's presence. When she calls his name, it answers in song, just before Peeta calls out for her.

Again, the mockingjay serves as one of Katniss' accomplices. Katniss tells herself that the only reason she's searching for Peeta is because it's the right thing for a tribute to do for her fellow district member under these circumstances. She also states that she's going because their survival depends upon them maintaining this false romance.

Katniss is hiding behind such reasoning, though it's plain to the reader that she has true feelings for Peeta. For instance, she's uncomfortable thinking about Peeta naked, hinting that she does see him as something than more than just a body, that there are romantic feelings there for him that make her uncomfortable in such a situation. She also finds herself suddenly overcome with fear that he might die, and this is the emotion that prompts her to kiss him.

Katniss continues to pretend that their love is an act, commenting on how good Peeta is at playing lover boy, when, in fact, it's very probable that Peeta isn't pretending at all. Katniss chooses not to recognize this, and she also chooses not to recognize the affection she has toward him. Glimmer tries next, but meets the same failure. At the urging of Peeta , the Careers decide to make camp below Katniss's tree so she can't escape without them knowing.

While stuck in the tree, Katniss cuts down a tracker jacker nest, which falls onto the sleeping Careers and chases them away from her tree. While Glimmer and the District 4 female die from their stings before they can make it to safety, Cato and the others escape to a nearby lake, where they fend off the remaining insects. With the Careers distracted, Katniss manages to pry the bow and arrows from Glimmer's corpse, but Peeta returns and urges her to run.

As he does so, Cato cuts his way through the brush and realizes what Peeta has done. Enraged at Peeta's betrayal, Cato engages the other tribute in a fight, a fight which Peeta swiftly loses, escaping only with a severe leg wound, tracker jacker strings, and burns retained from the fire. Some time later, while the Careers are still nursing their wounds, Cato and his allies stumble upon the District 3 male , whom they let join their alliance on the condition that he rewires the mines in the arena to protect their supplies.

When the Careers catch sight of smoke from Rue's lit fire a decoy for the Careers , they go to kill her, taking the District 3 male along at Cato's insistence.

In their absence, Foxface manages to steal supplies from the Careers' camp by stepping carefully around the mine indentations. This makes Katniss realize that the District 3 male has reactivated the mines in the form of a booby trap. Carefully shooting open a bag of apples, which spill out onto the ground around the Careers' camp, Katniss manages to activate all the mines at once, effectively destroying the Careers' supplies. When Cato returns with his allies, he descends into a fit of rage and snaps the neck of the District 3 male, killing him instantly.

His allies eventually manage to calm him down, and the Careers stride back into the woods to hunt. During the feast , Cato and Clove return to the Cornucopia and lie in wait for their backpack, which contains an item that they desperately need.

It is unknown why only Clove went in for the backpack, but by the time she is dying at the hands of Thresh , Cato is too far away to save her. As Katniss flees the feast, she sees Cato kneel beside Clove and beg her to stay with him. However, Clove soon succumbs to her injuries. By this time, Thresh has stolen both his own backpack and Cato's, which is most likely what motivates Cato to pursue Thresh instead of Katniss.

Presumably, Cato follows Thresh and kills him. Katniss speculates that the District 2 backpack contained body armor to fend against her arrows. On the last day of the Games , wolf-like muttations appear out of nowhere, chasing a bloodied and beaten Cato out of the woods.

Katniss and Peeta think he is on his way to kill them, so Katniss shoots an arrow at his chest, but it bounces off since he is wearing some sort of body armor that was thought to be in District 2's backpack. The two race after him after catching sight of the mutts. Once on top of the Cornucopia, Cato takes a few moments to catch his breath before he grabs Peeta in a headlock, effectively cutting off his ability to breathe.

When Katniss points an arrow at his head, Cato merely laughs and points out that if she shoots him, Peeta will fall to the mutts as well. Katniss figures out that if Peeta dies, Cato will use his body as a shield against her arrows. Almost out of options, Peeta shakily draws an "X" in blood on Cato's hand with his finger.

Katniss then shoots her arrow into Cato's hand, forcing him to reflexively release Peeta and fall to the mutts. At first, Cato fights the mutts off, as the sound of his sword against the Cornucopia can be heard for a long time. Eventually, despite his great strength and skill, he is disabled, and the mutts brutally attack him for what seems like hours, as he is too exhausted to defend himself.

When dawn comes, Katniss can't take Cato's moans of pain and despair any longer and decides to use her last arrow to end his suffering. With Peeta's help, she leans down into the mouth of the Cornucopia and finds a savagely bloodied Cato lying at the back. He mouths the word "please," and out of pity, not vengeance, she shoots the arrow into his head, killing him instantly.

In the film, Cato's death is slightly different. Unlike the novel, he is already on top of the Cornucopia - bloodied and beaten - before Katniss and Peeta arrive. He manages to attack both tributes at once in a last desperate attempt to kill them and puts Peeta in a headlock while Katniss is distracted by the mutts. When she turns around, ready to shoot Cato with her bow, he points out to her that if she shoots him, both he and Peeta will fall to the mutts.

He then rants about how the Capitol has made him into a pawn, as all he knows how to do is kill and his only goal in life is to bring pride to his district. When he falls to the mercy of the mutts, he does not suffer for very long, as Katniss shoots an arrow into his head almost seconds after his fall. Due to post-traumatic stress, Katniss begins to have frequent nightmares about the arena , one of which involves Cato dying at the claws of the mutts.

She later admits that most of the deaths in the Games were not very pretty, thinking specifically of Cato's and Glimmer's ends. Katniss later visits District 2 on her Victory Tour and see Cato's grieving family among the spectators. Katniss recounts the bloodlust of tributes from District 2 , including Cato.

She thinks of Cato several times, the first being when she encounters mockingjays , an incident which causes her to remember how the birds had started singing just before the mutts had "gnawed Cato to a bloody pulp. Katniss later visits District 2 and recalls seeing Cato's grieving family during the Victory Tour.

While sitting in the entrance hall of the Justice Building , she recalls the weariness of visiting District 2 on the Victory Tour, as it had been hard to be reminded of Cato and Clove , particularly Cato, who had died such a gruesome death.

In the novel, Cato's physical appearance is not addressed beyond Katniss's observations that he is a "physical wonder," with a robust stature and powerful, visibly well-muscled arms. He is the second largest tribute, only being slightly smaller than Thresh. He is capable of snapping a neck with his bare hands and demonstrates his raw physical power several times throughout the novel, most notably when he single-handedly fights off a pack of muttations for over an hour. Time stopped for Camellia at those words.

She turned to Effie, a shocked look on her face. I think the girl is going to pee her pants in excitement now. Camellia, if so, refrain. At this point Katniss had now walked back to the group and found her daughter to be slack jawed. Camellia took off running, and Katniss bolted after her when she saw the District 2 procession disappearing into another part of the building.

The little girl was fast, but her mother had longer legs. Katniss wrapped her arms around her daughter and dragged her back to an elevator that would take them to the twelfth floor. So far he had been the mentor of six victors in the Hunger Games over the past ten years. If anything, he knew how to create cold hearted killers. Rumor had it that he was helping to illegally train District 2 kids for the reaping, just as he had been illegally trained.

Haymitch sat beside Katniss on the couch on their floor lobby and handed her a drink. You are as charming as ever. I remember when I was your mentor. They all sat in amiable silence, knowing that the two new tributes from District 12 were many floors below getting prepared by their stylists. Katniss always felt odd being on the other side of the games now, helping the children get trained.

That is some deep seated hatred right there. However, is it really hatred? Oh yeah, the year we trained a winner.

You were so happy that one of our tributes won so of course we celebrated. But then, ooh it happened then. Katniss closed her eyes in pure mortification. Please world, just erase this moment and Haymitch Abernathy. Even after he shoved his tongue in your mouth. You sure have an odd way of expressing your hatred for people. Katniss slammed her hand down on the table. What I do with my private life is none of your damn business. All three heads snapped around to the new voice.

Katniss stood up and walked over to him, beet red with embarrassment. Cinna only grinned. I have missed dressing you up so much. Katniss smiled. The opening ball was generally a night where all the old victors came and mingled with former sponsors and other people from the Capitol.

It was an interesting affair, one that Katniss and Haymitch would have rather skipped every year. Alas, they could not. Cinna put a hand on her back and led her out of the room to so that he could take her to be prepped.

Cinna raised an eyebrow. The opening dance is yours. The crowd is going to lose their minds with excitement over this. When they passed Cato in the hall things went from bad to worse.

He raised an eyebrow as he watched Cinna escort Katniss to the styling room. Cinna stood between the two of them, trying to hold on to Katniss to keep her from flying at Cato. Lord in heaven, when will you two ever grow up and get past this ridiculousness?

Cinna grimaced. He pulled the daddy card. I think he won that battle, Katniss. Definitely not. Cato strode into the room like he owned the place and ended up in front of Katniss. He gave her a hard look and grabbed her arm in a vise like grip. He pulled her out of the room and down the hall, and Katniss could hear the loud murmur of hundreds of people just around the corner. Suddenly, Cato pushed her against the wall. Katniss slapped him, outraged.

Excuse me? Then he grinned at her, his teeth as bright and perfect as ever. He was handsome, and age had certainly improved his looks even further. He was tall and broad shouldered, his suit tight to his form.

His eyes traveled up and down her body slowly and Katniss flushed. Then he was pulling her out into the light as hundreds of camera flashes went off. Katniss squinted against the assault of flashes and Cato simply smiled into them, always comfortable in the spotlight. Katniss stood there beside him, breathless in the face of so many smiling, excited faces.

The music started, signaling it was time for them to officially open the ball. Cato moved as if to pull her onto the dance floor, just like he was supposed to, but Katniss stopped him and the crowd made some noises of confusion. He could see her struggling with herself, as if she were about to tell him something.

Cato also saw the moment that she shut her thoughts down. Katniss nodded and allowed him to grasp her hand in his as he pulled her around the room. She could feel the eyes of everyone on them and it made her feel slightly self conscious. At least Cato never let her stumble, as always. He never allowed her to embarrass herself in front of everyone. In fact, for the past few years Katniss had begun to suspect that the bartenders watered her alcohol down. She had also begun to suspect it was Cato that had paid them off because he would always come up to her and make some snide comment on how good it was to see her not blasted out of her mind at a Capitol party.

The world spun as he twirled her elegantly, and the cameras continued to flash. Katniss always tried her best, because who knew when Camellia was going to see a picture of the two of them? The tune changed and then it was time for everyone to join in. The party had been officially opened. Katniss looked up at his eyes questioningly, and he only smiled at her.

Katniss rolled her eyes at him exaggeratedly. He pulled her closer and she let him, her chest pressed up against his. She had to crane her neck back to look up at him; otherwise she would be staring straight at his chin. The competition between them had never ended, and soon the Hunger Games became just another rivalry between them to see who the best mentor was.

It had taken years, of course, for them to be able to tolerate each other completely, but it had happened over time. Cato moved them toward a corner of the dance floor. Katniss sighed mentally, here we go again, try to be nice, Katniss. Cato smiled sadly. I figured she would like the hunting knife though. Katniss nodded enthusiastically. She made me let her fix up the kills we brought back every day. How did you even find out that I had started teaching her how to hunt anyway?

He grinned broadly, smug as ever. He pulled Katniss even closer, his lips brushing her ear gently, causing her to shiver. She had kept Camellia from Cato originally because she had feared and hated him. Eventually it became an issue of Peeta, because how could she betray his memory further by allowing herself to become a family with the man that had killed him? Katniss moved closer to him, so close that he could smell her scent, the scent that never failed to arouse him.

He stepped back from her, his face an emotionless mask. Katniss shook her head, because she knew how much this separation had hurt him. Not about this.
