WLLD general manager Charlie Ochs questioned the negative response to the billboards, which stand in six locations in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.
He is more covered up than a lot of models on billboards and in magazines. In Largo, where another billboard towers above Astro Transmission on Seminole Boulevard, just north of Ulmerton Road, owners Jim Caul and Phyllis Stavola used words such as "cheap" and "tacky" to describe it. In Clearwater, Mary Bennett didn't notice Orlando until her year-old son pointed up at the billboard from the parking lot of the post office on Friday afternoon.
A regular listener, Bennett said she is used to seeing ads with scantily clad women, not men. Tipping the scales at pounds and standing 5 feet 11, Orlando knew the billboards, which started appearing two weeks ago, might cause a fuss.
Reclining sideways, head propped on one arm with the other stretched across his chest, Orlando posed in front of colleagues Gordie Daniels and Kathy Suzewits. From behind, they can be seen reaching over to dangle the station's logo strategically across his groin. Orlando said fan reaction has been entirely positive to the idea, which started as an on-air bit.
About e-mails later, the last 40 of which offered donations, Orlando said his bosses were convinced the idea could work. Subscribe Manage my subscription Activate my subscription Log in Log out. At The Freakshow, we concentrate on reaching people, with our mission, no matter how twisted and freaky, instead of how we appear. Orlando : I'll walk away like the great, Francis Albert Sinatra with a big " I did it my way". Our show is nothing like anything out there, and that's from perceptuals and listener response.
Everyone has the same access, but it's approaching the conversation with reality and honesty. We love that top story, being discussed on every dial position, but our twist is extremely different than the masses. We do it our way! Thanks Frank! Orlando : We have an entire team that was born and raised here, in the Tampa area excluding me. He was on the previous morning show, before I came aboard in He started in promotions, with the station, and became the whipping boy.
Now he's a viable partner in the on-air presentation of the show. I came to the show, from afternoons in April of Orlando : I'm the ringleader: usually the clear headed, even tempered, host that tries to balance the insanity, but has a huge affinity for strippers and porn stars. Gordie - the male chauvinist pig. Kathy : That party girl. She doesn't appear to take to many things seriously, except her beer, concerts, and Jimmy Buffet.
Anything else, she really isn't interested, and it plays well with the show. Paco - Our Fez of That 70's Show. Everything is lost in translation with him. People listen even closer to figure out what he's trying to pronounce. It's a mod squad, in here. Orlando : We have an entire show mapped out, when we walk into the door.
Usually we'll need that preparation if we pull an all nighter, which is often. Any other time, we change with the wind. Something will pop up, in conversation, and without warning I'll mention it, and we'll pick up the conversation on mic, and run with it.
Orlando : Everyone has a part in what we do, on air. Usually if we can argue, passionately about it, in my office, it makes the show. She brought so much porn in, that we started announcing whomever stopped by, would get free porn an the madness started. She got naked and took photos with guys and girls this IS Tampa, ya know.
She especially took great pics, with one of our listeners, who was just served with divorce papers. Sweet revenge. It was great radio. Orlando : We can take 'em or leave 'em. Because I'm the PD, as well, we have great relationships with a lot of artists, so that's something that our competition can't swing. Although we have the rapport with them, we don't build our show around em. Most times, if it's not something that the audience is checking for, we'll leave it out.
We'd rather do our show, instead of stopping down for a B guest. We've turned down more than we've taken, but the one's that we take end up part of the family and return again and again. Many of them have said that our show is nothing like they've ever done. We're proud of that. Orlando : Most memorable interviews, for us are always comedians because we have so much reverence for what the right ones bring. Our best guest, who hails from here, is Jim Breuer.
Suge Knight was also a great one, because he just doesn't care, what you talk about. He's going to give you whatever is on his mind, and while you hear what he's saying, you and the audience are thinking about what he ISN'T. Always fun. Orlando Necessary! Especially here.
